Why are we in Twillingate? Because the Newfoundland tourism lady said we should detour here to experience a genuine part of the culture. And she was right I guess, but she didn't mention it would add nearly 150 km to an already long ride and I suppose our motorcycle helmets weren't sufficient clue that we weren't traveling in a nice warm car! Both The and I have a new appreciation for the phrase 'chilled to the bone'.
We started out in raingear again (we're so good at this now) but didn't need it long. We kept it on though to block the cold. Not sure if this is a typical Newfoundland summer but a Vancouver winter is warmer!
Shortly after leaving we went through Wreckhouse, an area so windy it routinely blows trucks over and even lifts rail cars off the tracks. Today it was a breeze (The's pun!) and wasn't close to knocking a Goldwing off course.
We went through Cornerbrook and even saw some Newfoundland ski areas such as Marble Mountain.
When it came time to get off the highway we were pleased to be seeing some smaller towns. Twillingate is very much what you imagine a small coastal town here would be like.
But it's not all fishing - look what's for supper!
I just hope the antifreeze in the bike is good!
Tomorrow we set out for St. John's and the end of The 8000, although not the end of our journey as we want to see more of Nova Scotia on the way back. It will feel good though to have come as far east in Canada as we can travel and we're looking forward to kissing the cod and having some screech!
