Day Fourteen - Where are they?

Probably not where you think!  We were quite certain of a short ride to Montreal today, however, what apparently every one else but us knew is that a) it's the Montreal Grand Prix this weekend, b) it's fashion week there and c) no less than 3 boy bands are in town performing.

No wonder our attempts to book accommodation were going nowhere - either full or out of sight price wise. And by the way, we will not comment on the weather for a while as some people are misconstruing that we're having a bad time when it rains.  Not true, as someone reminded us today there is no bad weather, just bad clothing!

So where are we? Quebec City, at the very gates of the Maritimes.

We did a mix of back roads and the autoroute up the north shore of the St. Lawrence. We're staying a stone's throw from the legislature and the old city - and because everyone is in Montreal (ha!) we are staying in great accommodations at discounted rates!

More fabulous buildings, all very heritage - cool restaurants and bars - a very unique scene in North America.

We can't help but notice that it is hard to get by up here (not so much in QC itself) in English. Everyone speaks French and few people are bi-lingual.  So we tried French, ordering pastries flopped so I tried Esqu'vous avez patisseries?  A blank look, huh?, hmm, oh patisseries!  To us it sounded virtually identical but from the proud look on our server's face it was apparent that deciphering the German code book in the second world was easier than figuring out what we wanted.

But we did manage to get poutine at Aux Anciens Canadiens
Not sure what tomorrow will bring - we'll see!

  1. I've been to Quebec City twice. It's a great place but you're correct that once you leave the tourist area it is very difficult to find someone who can or will speak english.
